As we approached the end of the school year, students worked on culminating projects in various subjects. One important feature of these projects was student choice.
Research shows that when students are given opportunities to make choices about their learning, they become more engaged, motivated, and invested in their work. For English language learners, choice can be especially valuable because it allows students to showcase their understanding in ways that match their strengths, interests, and language development.
While all students work toward the same learning goals, choice allows them to demonstrate their knowledge in a way that feels meaningful and achievable.
For final projects, students had options such as:
● Creating a presentation
● Designing a poster or visual display
● Writing a story, report, or reflection
● Producing a digital project
Benefits of Student Choice:
Increased Motivation
Students are often more excited to complete projects when they can select a topic, format, or creative approach that interests them.
Greater Confidence
Choice allows students to build on their strengths while continuing to develop new skills. This can help students feel more successful and willing to take risks with language.
Improved Language Development
When students are interested in their work, they are more likely to practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Meaningful projects create authentic opportunities to use English.
Creativity and Critical Thinking
Student choice encourages learners to make decisions, solve problems, and think deeply about the texts they have studied.
