Over the past few weeks, 10th-grade students have been working diligently to write, design, and illustrate original children&#8217;s storybooks.<br>The project culminated this week in a fantastic cross-campus visit, where our high schoolers presented and read their finished books directly to enthusiastic 3rd-grade students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project required our 10th graders to think critically about audience, tone, and visual storytelling. To create engaging books for younger readers, students had to:<br>master narrative arcs, crafting clear plots with relatable characters and meaningful lessons,<br>incorporate visual elements, designing hand-drawn illustrations, storyboards, and interactive layouts to complement their text, and simplify complex themes, translating big ideas into language accessible and engaging for elementary students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The highlights of the project were the live reading sessions. Sitting together on classroom mats or sharing desks, our 10th graders brought their stories to life with animated voices and interactive questions. The 3rd graders were completely captivated, eagerly pointing at illustrations and asking our 10th graders how they came up with their ideas. For our high schoolers, it was a powerful exercise in public speaking, leadership, and community mentorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are incredibly proud of the creativity, empathy, and leadership our sophomores displayed throughout this unit.
