Over the past three weeks, our Grade 5 students have been turning the science lab into a workshop of creativity, discovery, and hands-on learning! As part of their study of Energy and Motion, students have been working on an exciting project that challenges them to apply scientific concepts in a practical way: designing and building their own cars. Rather than simply learning about motion from a textbook, students are seeing firsthand how forces and energy work together to make objects move.
Using everyday materials, students have transformed plastic bottles, chopsticks, bottle caps, and colored lollipop sticks into their own unique car designs. The plastic bottles form the bodies of the cars, while chopsticks and bottle caps are used to create axles and wheels. Students have also had the opportunity to personalize their creations with colorful decorations, giving every car its own character. With careful teacher supervision, hot glue has been used to secure the different components as students work through the challenges of constructing a vehicle that is both creative and functional.
The project has provided many opportunities for students to experiment, problem-solve, and learn through trial and error. As they build and test their cars, students are discovering how wheel placement, friction, balance, and design can influence the way an object moves. When something does not work as expected, they are encouraged to identify the problem, adjust their design, and try again. This process has helped students understand that science is not only about finding the correct answer\u2014it is also about asking questions, testing ideas, and learning from unexpected results.
Most importantly, the project has brought enthusiasm and curiosity into the science lab. Students have enjoyed collaborating with classmates, sharing ideas, and watching their designs gradually come to life. We are excited to see the finished cars and to put their creations to the test! Through this project, our Grade 5 scientists are learning that Energy and Motion can be explored not only through equations and diagrams, but also through creativity, teamwork, and hands-on discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
